Corpus Lotus Investigating the body as a site of instability and flux

Thursday 1st September 2011, 6.30 - 9pm

Show continues Friday – Sunday, 1 - 5pm

Corpus Lotus presents artworks by five RCA alumni, in which the body as a site of instability and flux is investigated alongside issues of the body in a state of protest. The exhibition fuses a range of media from printmaking through photography and video to performance, via the work of artists Cordelia Cembrowicz, Valerie Furnham, Jon Mayers, Darragh O’ Callaghan and Lauren Winsor.

The body is often perceived as emblematic of an expanded, social and inclusive self. It holds the power to express our universal, species-specific humanity and the mutuality of our inter-species relationships. Corpus Lotus investigates the corporal as a vehicle to explore the complexities of contemporary identity, journeying down a variety of avenues of human morality and existence.

Its transgressive, structured and rebellious natures are explored as a way of dealing with social, scientific and mental concerns. Through these works the interwoven relationships of process and time are explored. Traditional representations of the body are reinterpreted and disrupted, in order to present a contemporary, transformative, body of work, emblematic of freedom, and sexuality.

Time Out First Thursdays - Performance by Darragh O’ Callaghan, Thursday 1st September 7.30pm.
