In 2007, in France, a book called The Coming Insurrection was discreetly published. Two years and ten arrests for the association of evildoers in connection with a terrorist enterprise later, the book benefited from unexpected media coverage. Numerous translations followed, spreading some more controversy about the supposed danger of a text that tries to come to grips with the question of revolution--that is, the perspective of an uprising, an upheaval, the insurrection, here and now. It is always a good thing that political works spread outside the radical milieu. Yet the reactions about The Coming Insurrection in that very milieu were sadly polarized between two dead-ends: the blissful fetishization of what could be seen as the new trendy identity in the marketplace of radical ideas, and the febrile ruminations of those who saw that sudden enthusiasm cut into their slice of the miserable pseudo-radical cake. On one side or the other, it's the same confusion that gives itself airs of intelligence. We (some alleged members of The Invisible Committee) think, to the contrary, that what is exposed and developed in The Coming Insurrection as well as in Call or the journal Tiqqun has to be considered as a proposition: What is a radical political, strategic, and ethical position at odds with and within the current war? We must learn to handle concepts like weapons. If we pretend to have the goal of building a revolutionary movement, then we need friendly--or vociferous--debate within it.
